Designated a protected area in 1962 for Postfenn and 1960 for Teufelsfenn. The official protection order was renewed in 2017. Postfenn is a living testament to nature’s resilience. Drainage and peat extraction altered the landscape for centuries. Yet the fascinating flora and interesting amphibians remain. Postfenn is an easily accessible area for visitors to explore. Notice the unique plants. The area supports various amphibian species. Thirty-five bird species have been identified as breeding here. In 2008 scientists discovered the bog bush-cricket. A true rarity. It thrives in the specific conditions of Postfenn. Postfenn’s history is intertwined with the Teufelssee. A nearby glacial lake. The Teufelssee waterworks once drew water from this lake. These works were decommissioned in 1969. They now contribute to the nature reserve’s conservation efforts. Groundwater from the waterworks helps maintain Postfenn’s water levels. This sustains the unique ecosystem of the bog. Postfenn is more than just a swamp. It’s a window into the past.
