Considering Essen’s skyline, our gaze is drawn to the Postbank-Hochhaus. This remarkable building stands as a testament to architectural innovation. It is a symbol of Essen’s post-war ambition. Let’s delve into the story of this iconic structure.

The Postbank-Hochhaus wasn’t just built. It represented a vision. Essen needed a modern postal center in the 1950s. The existing post office was too small and spread across the city. Imagine the logistical challenges. Different departments scattered hindering efficiency. The Oberpostdirektion in Düsseldorf decided to consolidate operations. A new building was essential.

In 1957, the location was chosen. It was south of Essen’s main train station. The land belonged to Friedrich Krupp AG. Construction began in September 1963. The topping-out ceremony was held on October 15 1965. Before Essen’s Rathaus was erected in 1979, the Postbank-Hochhaus was the city’s tallest building.

The Postbank-Hochhaus formed an architectural axis. It stood with the AEG-Haus built in 1953. The Rheinstahl-Hochhaus was also part of this group. They aligned along the railway and Kruppstraße. This combination represented a new American-inspired building philosophy.

The Lever House in New York served as inspiration. This International Style influenced the design. The Postbank-Hochhaus features a slim tower. This tower rises 17 stories above a two-story flat building. The design met the company’s spatial requirements. The tiered floors allowed for short internal routes. Five passenger elevators serve the building. Three freight elevators and two stairwells also provide access.

The core has a reinforced concrete skeleton. Its floor levels span over 14 meters. The Postbank-Hochhaus reaches 91.59 meters. It has 19 floors making it Essen’s third tallest building today. The building is fully air-conditioned. A curtain wall of glass and light metal encloses it.

Striking light metal ribs define the exterior. These form a band-like sunshade. They emphasize the building’s horizontal lines. Originally, each floor had an open-plan office. Natural light flooded these spaces. This allowed for views through the floors from outside. The building conveyed a sense of transparency. Today many of these open floors are divided. Walls create smaller offices.

In 2010, the Postbank-Hochhaus received a special honor. It was placed under monument protection. This ensures we never forget its architectural significance. The Postbank-Hochhaus stands as a proud symbol of Essen’s history.
