From a hospital to a hub of communication, the Postal Administration in Seoul stands as a testament to Korea’s evolving history. The Postal Administration building, originally Jeonuigam, a national hospital during the Joseon Dynasty, took on a new role in 1884. King Gojong decreed the establishment of the Central Postal Service Office within this very building. He appointed Hong Yeong-shik to lead the operation, which officially commenced on November 18, 1884, connecting Seoul and Incheon. The Postal Administration’s launch was marked by a celebratory banquet on December 4, 1884. Ironically, this event became the backdrop for the Gapsin Coup, a failed modernization attempt. This unfortunate incident led to the temporary suspension of postal services. The building, however, persevered. After Korea’s liberation from Japanese rule, the Ministry of Post, now the Ministry of Information and Telecommunication, managed the historic structure. Its significance was further recognized in 1970. It was designated Historic Site #213, acknowledging its age and its connection to the independence movement. Following renovations in 1972, it reopened as the Postal Administration, a museum dedicated to Korea’s postal history. Another remodel in 1987 enhanced the exhibits with replicas from the Seoul Central Post Office’s Post Museum. Surrounding the Postal Administration is the inviting Post Park, a 1,600-square-meter space blending tradition, education, and recreation. Within the park, you’ll find the Stamp Garden, inspired by Korea’s first stamp, and the Letter Garden, featuring benches shaped like historical stationery and post boxes. The Postal Administration in Seoul isn’t just a building. It’s a journey through time, connecting Korea’s past and present.
