Raúl Chorão Ramalho a Portuguese architect designed the school in 1963. It officially opened in 1966. The Macau Portuguese School provides several facilities. These include a library classrooms a large patio a gym and an amphitheater. The school welcomes students from diverse backgrounds. Today many Chinese and local students attend. They seek a Portuguese education.
The Macau Portuguese School opened in 1998. It took students from three older schools. These were Escola Primária Oficial Escola Comercial Pedro Nolasco and Liceu de Macau. The current school is on the former site of the Escola Comercial.
Initially the Macau Portuguese School served over 1100 students. Numbers declined as Portuguese families left Macau. Around 2012 this trend reversed. More students without Portuguese backgrounds began enrolling. By 2023 the school had 713 students. Over 40% did not have Portuguese as their first language.
The curriculum aligns with the Portuguese Ministry of Education. It adapts to Macau’s laws and context. Portuguese is the primary language of instruction. There was a push in 2018 for more Mandarin Chinese expeditions outside of the classroom.
The Macau Portuguese School is near the Ferreira do Amaral roundabout. This central bus stop connects the school to the city. New Yaohan shopping mall is also close. Nearby eateries include Margaret’s Café e Nata and Caravela. Hotels like Lisboa and Grand Lisboa are also within easy reach.
