Originally known as Escola Comercial Pedro Nolasco da Silva, its name changed in 1999. This change marked it as the only official Portuguese education structure in Macau. While Portuguese classes exist elsewhere the Macau Portuguese School uniquely follows Portugal’s curriculum. This includes their exams and disciplines.

Raúl Chorão Ramalho a Portuguese architect designed the school in 1963. It officially opened in 1966. The Macau Portuguese School provides several facilities. More students without Portuguese backgrounds began enrolling. By 2023 the school had 713 students. Over 40% did not have Portuguese as their first language.

The curriculum aligns with the Portuguese Ministry of Education. It adapts to Macau’s laws and context. Portuguese is the primary language of instruction. There was a push in 2018 for more Mandarin Chinese expeditions outside of the classroom.
