How many stories can a church tell? Stand right here and I’ll show you some of the tales hidden within the Portuguese Church in Mumbai. You’re looking at the oldest church in the city, founded way back in 1596 by the Portuguese Franciscan Missionaries, although it was rebuilt in 1651, and even then, was older than the city itself. The original building was called Nossa Senhora da Salvaçao – Our Lady of Salvation.

A lot of buildings in Mumbai have a history spanning back to the Portuguese era. This one is unique, though. You can see this in its modern architecture designed by the renowned Charles Correa, constructed from 1974 until 1977. He designed the building with a series of interlinked spaces, some covered, others open to the sky, mimicking Christ’s life… It’s quite unique.

It’s also unique because Correa sought the help of famous Indian artists. Look closely at the central roof. You’ll see stained glass made by M F Husain, depicting the biblical miracle of the loaves and fishes and the death and resurrection of Christ. Now gaze at the side chapel. Anjolie Ela Menon painted a depiction on the cross with Mary and John on either side of Christ.

It’s not just about religion. This church is a meeting ground. You can find a medical centre, a fitness centre, an Alcoholics Anonymous group, and even a help group inside it.

So, you see, there’s more to this building than the architectural flourishes that catch the eye. It’s the heart of a truly fascinating history, and a place that is still actively serving the community today.
