The salty air whips around you. The Queen Salote International Wharf stands before you. It’s more than just a port. It’s the beating heart of Tonga’s economy.

The Ports Authority Tonga PAT isn’t just about shipping containers. It’s a story of resilience. It’s about a nation facing the harsh realities of climate change. Think about the constant threat of cyclones earthquakes and tsunamis. These are real dangers for Tonga. The wharf itself is less than three meters above sea level.

The old wharf was struggling. Its facilities were degrading. The concrete was decaying. Berthing was a constant problem. Safety was substandard. This was a crucial issue for the people of Tonga. Ninety-eight percent of Tonga’s imports arrive through this port.

But then came a major upgrade. A $45 million grant from the Asian Development Bank ADB launched a transformation. The project is ambitious. It aims to create a world-class international port. The goal is to modernize the wharf. It will better accommodate larger vessels. The project also includes climate-resilient modifications.

The ADB recognized the challenges. They understood that upgrading ports in the Pacific is vital. It’s not just about infrastructure. It’s about removing inefficiencies reducing costs and protecting against natural disasters. The project includes gender aspects to promote women’s participation.

This wasn’t just about throwing money at the problem. Royal Haskoning DHV an international engineering firm designed the upgrade. They conducted a thorough climate and disaster risk assessment. They used insights from local people. They proposed to demolish and rebuild Wharf 1. They would extend Wharf 2 by 45 meters. They would also build four additional dolphins and deploy new channel navigation markers. Even the demolished concrete from Wharf 1 was reused in coastal protection.

McConnell Dowell a leading New Zealand firm handled the construction. They established a three-phase work program. They used local workforce upskilling them in various areas. The project is massive. It includes refurbishing cargo docks building a new seawall reorganizing the container yard and upgrading the port road. The project integrates green and smart solutions.

The final result is expected by 2026. The modernized wharf will see a 50 percent increase in throughput. It will be more efficient. Maintenance costs will be lower. Its carbon footprint will be reduced. Most importantly it will provide much safer working conditions. All this for a nation heavily reliant on its only deep-sea harbor port. That’s the story of the Ports Authority Tonga a testament to perseverance ingenuity and a commitment to a brighter future.
