The Portable Trojan Bear, a sculpture by artist Jim Love, is a sight that will surely make you chuckle. It’s a giant, clunky bear, made of wood and metal, perched on wheels. The quirky sculpture pays homage to the Trojan Horse story, but with a twist: it’s a bear, not a horse. Created in 1974, the Trojan Bear has been through a lot. The bear was originally located at an intersection in Houston, but in 1984, found a new home in Hermann Park. This grand park offered a sprawling green space, the perfect stage for this oversized teddy bear to showcase its playfulness. Over time, the bear weathered the elements. In 2008, it went through a major restoration. Thankfully, the iconic smile and the adorable clunkiness were spared. The restoration ensured that the bear could continue to roll through history for years to come. This sturdy bear is a reminder that even though times change, playfulness and good humour can remain constant.
