Tucked away on St Clement’s Street, the Port Mahon isn’t just any pub. It’s a living piece of Oxford’s vibrant tapestry. The Port Mahon is more than just a place for a pint. This Grade II-listed building has a quirky layout that adds to its charm. The main room is a few steps up from the street. Then, you descend to another room, with the bar serving both levels. This unusual arrangement speaks to the pub’s history, a history as layered and intriguing as its architecture. In May 2019, the Port Mahon underwent extensive refurbishment. It shed its “Hungry Horse” affiliation and emerged with a renewed focus on what makes a pub truly special: community, live music, and good cheer. The Port Mahon is a hub for music lovers. Local bands grace the upstairs room most nights. You can catch everything from folk and open mic nights in the back bar to talks and comedy shows. Check their Facebook page for event details, as sometimes there’s an entrance fee. The pub also hosts regular folk music sessions. There’s a French/Breton session on the second Monday of each month. A Scandi session takes place on the third Monday. And for something different, try the Galician session on the fourth Wednesday. Even if you’re not a music fan, the Port Mahon offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. Grab a seat in the courtyard garden. It’s the perfect place to relax between bands or simply soak in the lively atmosphere of Cowley Road. The Port Mahon is a true Oxford classic. It offers a unique blend of history, music, and community spirit. So, step inside, raise a glass, and experience the magic for yourself.
