How about stepping back in time to when this very spot looked quite different? The Port Louis City Hall stands here today. It is more than just a building. It embodies Port Louis’s journey through history.

Let’s dive into the story of this place. The Port Louis City Hall we see now was built in 1965. But it replaced an older building. That older building was known as Hotel D’Europe.

The idea for a municipal corporation in Port Louis started in the 1820s. People like Adrien D’Epinay and Rémy Ollier pushed for it. D’Epinay founded the newspaper Le Cernéen. Ollier was the editor of La Sentinelle de Maurice.

During the French Revolution in 1790, things changed. The Colonial Assembly created municipalities in different areas. Mr. Enouf became the first mayor of Port Louis. Later, Mr. Francois Fressanges took his place.

However in 1820, the Conseil de Commune dissolved. These municipalities disappeared. Adrien d’Epinay fought to bring them back. After his death, Rémy Ollier continued the fight. In 1848, a public gathering occurred at the Hotel D’Europe. Many people signed a petition supporting the cause.

The first municipal elections under British Mauritius took place in 1850. Mr. Louis L’échelle became the town’s first Mayor. Mr. Félix Koenig was the vice-mayor. Initially, the municipal staff worked from a rented house. This house was on Edith Cavell Street. It was previously known as Rempart Street.

In 1866, Mr. Charles Pitot moved the offices. He was the 6th mayor of Port Louis. He moved them to the Grand Hotel D’Europe. The municipality acquired it to use as the town hall.

An important change happened in 1966. Port Louis went from being a Town to a City. The ceremony coincided with the opening of the new City Hall. Construction began in 1965 and it was inaugurated in 1966. In 1971, Sir Gaetan Duval received the title of Lord Mayor. He was the city’s first magistrate.

Even today, Port Louis has reminders of the first Mayors. Their names are engraved on structures around the city. Port Louis itself is a vibrant town. It is the economic hub of Mauritius. It is a cultural melting pot. Traditions and modern life exist side by side.
