“Poppo’s clearing” they called it. That’s what Poppenreuth means. Can you imagine the scene a thousand years ago? Imagine Poppo and his crew hacking away at the ancient forest east of the Pegnitz and Regnitz rivers. This was the starting point for clearing the land. This very spot you stand on now was once dense woodland.
Poppenreuth a Franconian village is now a district of Fürth. Its history stretches back to around the year 1000. A pious hermit named Sebald lived here. The first written record of Poppenreuth dates from 1303.
The Thirty Years’ War impacted Poppenreuth greatly from 1632 to 1634. The church a stone structure survived. It was badly plundered though. In 1732 Salzburg religious refugees arrived boosting Poppenreuth’s population. In 1787 Poppenreuth was still a Nuremberg parish village. It belonged to the Cadolzburg court.
On July 3 1796 Poppenreuth became part of the Kingdom of Prussia. It was placed under Ansbach’s administration. The subsequent wars against France cost Poppenreuth 100000 gulden. In 1839 Poppenreuth had 325 inhabitants.
The arrival of the Ludwigskanal in 1843 was a turning point. A port opened here. A train station followed in 1843 on the Nuremberg Bamberg line. Poppenreuth was now well-connected. Its canal port sat where the Frankenschnellweg is today. For a time Poppenreuth had a long-distance train station even before Fürth did.
In 1898 a vote took place on whether to join Fürth. Fürth wanted Poppenreuth. Nuremberg was also interested. The vote favoured Fürth. On January 1 1900 Poppenreuth became a part of Fürth. The area covered 345 hectares 104 properties and 950 inhabitants.
Poppenreuth though has kept its character. It remains a Knoblauchsland village a village within a city. Its long history around a thousand years old has shaped it. You can feel that history all around you here today in Poppenreuth. In 2021 the Ringbahn inn closed and was demolished. In January 2025 a celebration marked Poppenreuth’s 125th anniversary as part of Fürth. A new chapter is written. But Poppenreuth’s unique story continues.
