From whispers passed down through generations, a tale unfolds at Popp Fountain. This isn’t just any fountain. Popp Fountain, nestled within City Park, holds a unique place in New Orleans’ occult history. During the 1970s, when the air crackled with the energy of the Age of Aquarius, Popp Fountain became a sanctuary for the Religious Order of Witchcraft. Led by the enigmatic Mary Oneida Toups, this coven chose the fountain, then overgrown and neglected, as their ritual site. Mary Oneida, originally from Mississippi, arrived in New Orleans in 1968. She quickly established herself as a prominent figure in the world of witchcraft. She opened witchcraft shops in the French Quarter, published an acclaimed occult text, “Magick High and Low,” and even ran a bar with her husband for a brief time. While the city buzzed with counterculture movements, Mary Oneida’s Order focused on Western ceremonialist magic, distinct from the more familiar voodoo and hoodoo practices of New Orleans. Imagine the scene: under the cloak of night, the coven gathered at Popp Fountain, their rituals bathed in the soft glow of moonlight. Their practices, shrouded in secrecy, added another layer of mystique to this already enchanting city.
