Pontonjärparken wasn’t always a place for leisurely strolls and picnics. It was once a hub of military activity, home to the Pontonjärbataljonen, a specialized engineer corps, from 1856 to 1922. Imagine the park filled with bustling soldiers, their days consumed by the art of bridge building, road construction and even the precarious tasks of demolition and mining. The park’s very name, Pontonjärparken, pays homage to this battalion, its legacy etched in the green expanse. Picture rows of barracks, officers’ messes and stables, a testament to the battalion’s presence. The rhythmic clang of hammers against metal would have been a familiar sound as these skilled engineers honed their craft. In 1922, the military chapter of Pontonjärparken closed. The old structures were demolished, making way for the residential buildings you see today. However, a solitary memorial stone stands tall in the park, a silent sentinel remembering the soldiers who once called this place home.
