Once known as Ponte Lungo or Ponte Longo, this place is now called Pontelungo. Pontelungo sits southwest of Vidigulfo’s center. It angles toward Gualdrasco. Pontelungo is a small part of Vidigulfo.

Let’s step back in time. Pontelungo’s story is one of conflict and autonomy. In the Middle Ages, both Pavia and Milan wanted Pontelungo. Milan won. Pontelungo became part of the Vicariato di Binasco.

For centuries, Pontelungo ran its own affairs. This long period of self-rule almost ended once before. Empress Maria Theresa tried to take over Pontelungo. But she quickly changed her mind.

The Austrian government finally annexed Pontelungo to Vidigulfo. This happened by decree on April 4, 1842. So ended Pontelungo’s independent streak.

Imagine life in Pontelungo before 1842. Villagers made their own decisions. They managed their own resources. They settled their own disputes. Now, they had to answer to Vidigulfo.

What did the people of Pontelungo think about this change? Did they resist? Did they accept it? History doesn’t always tell us everything. But we can imagine their concerns. We can picture their debates.

Today, Pontelungo is a quiet part of Vidigulfo. But its history reminds us of a time when it stood alone. It reminds us of the struggles between Pavia and Milan. Pontelungo is a place with a story. It is a story of autonomy lost but not forgotten.
