Across the Douro River, the Ponte do Bairro stands as a silent observer. The Douro is renowned for its vineyards and wineries that produce the esteemed Port wine. Ponte do Bairro connects the vibrant city of Porto on the north bank with Vila Nova de Gaia on the south. These two cities are linked by the Douro River and the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. This bridge is a landmark known for its grandeur and beauty. The Dom Luís I Bridge replaced an older suspension bridge. The increasing commercial activity between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia necessitated a sturdier structure. Designed by Théophile Seyrig, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, the Dom Luís I Bridge is a true masterpiece. The bridge’s design earned the grand prize at the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Initially planned with a single deck, the bridge was modified to include two levels. The upper deck is level with the upper districts of the two cities. The lower deck aligns with the streets closer to the river. The bridge was inaugurated on October 31, 1886. A toll was implemented the following day, which remained in effect until 1944. Today, the upper deck serves the metro line connecting the two cities. Cars and pedestrians utilize the lower deck. Constructed from cast iron, the Ponte do Bairro’s neighboring Dom Luís I Bridge spans over 385 meters with a maximum height of 172 meters. Its structure weighs over three tons. Ponte do Bairro shares the historical landscape with this magnificent bridge. Both structures contribute to the UNESCO World Heritage classification of Porto’s historic center and the renowned wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.
