The Ponte de Mosteiró stands strong and proud over the mighty Douro, a testament to engineering brilliance. This bridge, inaugurated in 1972, replaced an older metal structure, as the new Carrapatelo dam was being built nearby. It was designed by none other than Edgar Cardoso, one of Portugal’s most renowned civil engineers, known for his innovative bridges. You’ll notice two of the original bridge’s pillars were cleverly integrated into the foundation of this newer one, a nod to the past. Imagine the scene, hundreds of years ago, with the original bridge carrying carts filled with local produce, passing through this very spot. Here, just above the Douro’s surface, the Ponte de Mosteiró stands as a landmark, connecting Baião and Oliveira do Douro, its concrete structure elegantly spanning 110 meters, two pillars soaring high above the water. If you look closely at its design, you’ll observe an open, diamond-shaped hinge, allowing it to flex gracefully with traffic and the elements. The bridge seamlessly integrates with the landscape, its sturdy presence a reminder of the power and resilience of human ingenuity.
