Crossing the Rivière des Prairies, the Pont Olivier-Charbonneau stands as a modern marvel. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a testament to innovative engineering and a vital artery connecting Laval and Montreal. The Pont Olivier-Charbonneau, opened in May 2011, wasn’t always known by this name. Before May 2012, it was simply the A25 Bridge. Its current name honors Olivier Charbonneau, a French frontiersman and the first inhabitant of Île Jésus, the very island where Laval now stands. He arrived in 1675, settling on land near where the northern base of the bridge now lies. Imagine, land once owned by the Charbonneau family now supports this impressive structure. The Pont Olivier-Charbonneau is a cable-stayed bridge, a sophisticated design choice reflecting its modern construction. It carries six lanes of Autoroute 25, three in each direction, ensuring smooth traffic flow between the two cities. This bridge also boasts a cycling path on its east side, offering breathtaking views of the Rivière des Prairies. It’s not just a bridge for vehicles. It’s a bridge for people. This project was a significant undertaking. It formed part of a 7.2-kilometer extension of Highway 25. It allows motorists to bypass Montreal’s often-congested Metropolitan Expressway by connecting the Louis Hippolyte Lafontaine Tunnel to Highway 440. Locally, it provides a much-needed alternative to the Pie IX Bridge upstream. The Pont Olivier-Charbonneau is one of only two toll bridges in Quebec. It uses an electronic system. This means no stopping at toll booths, which helps keep traffic moving. Drivers can set up an account and install a transponder in their vehicle. For those without a transponder, a photo of the license plate is taken, and an invoice is mailed. Interestingly, pedestrians, cyclists, and electric vehicles can cross the Pont Olivier-Charbonneau for free. The bridge stands as a vital link, a symbol of connection, and a tribute to a pioneering settler. It’s a modern marvel with a story to tell.
