Across the rushing waters of the Arve River stands the Pont de Sierne. It connects the Swiss communes of Thônex and Veyrier. The Pont de Sierne isn’t just a bridge. It’s a gateway through time. Let’s journey back to 1778. Imagine the clatter of hooves and creak of wooden carts. The original Pont de Sierne, commissioned by the Piedmontese monarchy, was a vital trade route. It allowed goods, especially salt from Tarentaise and Provence, to bypass Geneva’s customs. This clever maneuver angered Geneva but boosted trade along the Arve. The bridge became a crucial link. It connected the newly established port of Bellerive on Lake Geneva with the trading routes beyond. The Pont de Sierne played an important role during the turbulent years of the early 19th century. Annexed by France during the First French Empire, the region became part of the Léman department. The Austrian army destroyed the bridge in the early 1800s. It was rebuilt after Veyrier joined the canton of Geneva. The Pont de Sierne has seen its share of disasters. A devastating fire destroyed a nearby mill district in 1859. A raging flood in 1843 washed away part of the bridge. From 1887 to 1956, the Geneva-Veyrier railway even crossed the Pont de Sierne. The Pont de Sierne you see today is a testament to progress. The old metal bridge was completely rebuilt between 1981 and 1983. It became a modern four-lane concrete structure. This project, envisioned by Councillor Jaques Vernet, cost over 4 million Swiss francs. In 1985, a monitoring lab was installed downstream. It constantly analyzes the Arve’s water quality. Today, the Pont de Sierne is more than a crossing. It’s a launching point. Rafting companies offer thrilling descents of the Arve River. The journey ends in Carouge. The Pont de Sierne stands as a silent witness. It reflects the history and resilience of the region. It has withstood destruction, floods and the changing needs of commerce. It serves as a vital artery connecting communities.
