Picture this a quaint village nestled along the Marque River. This is Pont-à-Marcq a place steeped in history and charm. For centuries Pont-à-Marcq has stood as a vital crossroads. Its strategic location on the Lille-Douai axis shaped its destiny. The name itself hints at its importance. Originally called Pons de Marka or Marque-en-Pévèle it evolved into Pont-à-Marcq. This name change clarified its identity separating it from another Marcq. This strategic location attracted travelers merchants and armies.
Pont-à-Marcq’s history is a tapestry woven with threads of war and peace. In 1304 it played a crucial role in the Battle of Mons-en-Pévèle. Armies marched through Pont-à-Marcq. The village witnessed the pillage and devastation. During the French Revolution Austrian troops occupied Pont-à-Marcq. They used the church as a garrison. After the wars the church lay in ruins. It was later rebuilt in 1842 by Julien Desprez a priest who rose to become a bishop and cardinal.
Pont-à-Marcq’s strategic importance also led to the establishment of a post relay. Minister Louvois created this relay during Louis XIV’s reign. It was one of only four such relays in the Lille region. The relay thrived. It boasted over thirty horses. Napoleon and Louis XVIII even passed through.
