Interesting, isn’t it? Pomonok stands as a testament to New York City’s post-World War II housing efforts. Today, we are standing in Pomonok. This working-class neighborhood in Queens has a unique story.

Pomonok’s name has Native American origins. It comes from the Algonquian word for Long Island. It means “land of tribute” or “land where there is traveling by water”.

Once a country club, the Pomonok area transformed in the late 1940s. The Pomonok Country Club operated here from 1886 to 1949. It was a popular golf course designed by Devereux Emmet. The PGA Championship even took place here in 1939. Henry Picard emerged victorious.

After the club disbanded, the land was sold. In its place rose the Pomonok Houses and Electchester Houses. These large housing developments shaped the neighborhood we see today. Construction occurred rapidly between 1949 and 1951.

Harry Van Arsdale Jr. of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers played a key role in establishing Electchester. He worked with the Joint Industry Board of the Electrical Industry. Together, they purchased the former Pomonok Country Club. They built apartment buildings for union members. Electchester comprises about 2,500 units in 36 buildings. These include two 23-story towers.

Pomonok has faced challenges. In 1992, New York City settled a lawsuit. The lawsuit claimed that the city steered white families into Pomonok. It also alleged unequal maintenance standards compared to projects with more Black and Hispanic families.

The Pomonok Houses have a community center. Queens Community House operates it. It offers programs for seniors, after-school activities, and summer camps.

Several notable people have called Pomonok home. Former U.S. Representative Gary Ackerman grew up here. Council member Barry Grodenchik also spent his childhood in the Pomonok Houses. Film producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein lived in Electchester during their early years.

Transportation is readily available. Several bus routes serve Pomonok. These include the Q25, Q34, Q64, and Q65. Express buses like the QM4 and QM44 connect to Midtown Manhattan.

Pomonok is a vibrant community. It has a diverse population and a strong sense of neighborhood pride. The area continues to evolve. Pomonok is a testament to the ever-changing face of New York City.

So, next time you hear the name Pomonok, remember its journey. From a country club to a diverse residential area. It reflects the city’s history and its people.
