Hidden amongst the dense trees near Frankfurt an der Oder, the Pomnik Ofiarom obozu pracy “Schwetig” stands as a stark reminder of a tragic past. This memorial commemorates the thousands of victims of the brutal forced labor camp, Lager Schwetig “Oderblick”. The name itself, “Oderblick,” meaning “Oder view,” is a cruel irony. The prisoners here saw little of the Oder River’s beauty. Their view was one of barbed wire, watchtowers, and relentless labor. Established in October 1940, Lager Schwetig initially housed those working on the Frankfurt-Poznań highway. It served a dual purpose. It was both a camp for the Reich Autobahn company and a “correctional labor camp” for the Gestapo. The Pomnik Ofiarom obozu pracy “Schwetig” honors those who suffered within its confines. Initially built to hold 360 prisoners, it soon swelled to accommodate around 500 at a time, with an estimated 11,500 passing through its gates. The average stay was a mere two months, but for many, it was a death sentence. Typhus ravaged the camp in the autumn of 1941, killing nearly all the inmates during the quarantine period. The camp reopened in May 1942, but death remained a constant companion. Prisoners succumbed to exhaustion, starvation, cold, accidents, suicide, and brutal murder at the hands of the guards. The Pomnik Ofiarom obozu pracy “Schwetig” stands as a testament to their suffering. In June 1944, Lager Schwetig became an extension of the Frankfurt police prison, granting the police increased authority and capacity. While initially housing foreign workers for minor offenses, it later held German political prisoners. However, the majority remained forced laborers from occupied countries, primarily Poles. As the Red Army approached in January 1945, around 800 prisoners remained in Lager Schwetig. An additional 800 arrived from other camps. The sick and those unable to march were locked in their barracks, doused with gasoline, and burned alive. Those who tried to escape were shot. The remaining 1,600 were forced on a death march west, across the Oder River bridge in Frankfurt. Some were put to work building trenches. Others continued their grim journey. The Pomnik Ofiarom obozu pracy “Schwetig” ensures that these victims are not forgotten. It is a quiet space, allowing us to reflect on the cruelty inflicted within those now overgrown woods. The memorial stands as a solemn warning, urging us to never forget the atrocities committed at Lager Schwetig and to work tirelessly to prevent such horrors from ever happening again.
