Deep in the heart of Portugal, nestled in a serene valley, lies the captivating village of Pombeiro de Ribavizela. A place of ancient whispers and echoes of history, Pombeiro de Ribavizela guards a treasure: the magnificent Monastery of Santa Maria de Pombeiro. This monastery, often simply called the Monastery of Pombeiro, stands as a testament to centuries of devotion and power. The story of Pombeiro de Ribavizela begins in the 11th century. In 1059, Dom Gomes Aciegas laid the foundation for this sacred place. Construction concluded in 1102, marking the birth of a spiritual sanctuary. From these early days, remnants whisper tales of the past. Two small chapels beneath the main altar still stand. The original entrance door and fortified arches also remain. Pombeiro de Ribavizela’s monastery wasn’t simply a religious center. It became intertwined with the fortunes of royalty and noble families. King Ferdinand I of Castile granted ownership of the monastery to his nephew. It then passed through the hands of powerful families. These families left their mark, their tombs adorning the monastery porch. Throughout the centuries, Pombeiro de Ribavizela and its monastery witnessed both prosperity and turmoil. Royal patronage brought privileges and wealth. Major renovations transformed the monastery’s appearance. The 18th century saw the addition of stunning features. A magnificent organ, intricate retables, and rich paintings adorned the interior. But the 19th century brought a period of decline. The monks were expelled in 1834. The monastery fell into disrepair. It wasn’t until the 20th century that restoration efforts began. Declared a National Monument in 1910, the Monastery of Pombeiro slowly regained its former glory. The Portuguese government purchased the building. Numerous restoration projects throughout the 20th century breathed new life into the aging stones. Pombeiro de Ribavizela’s monastery stands today as a symbol of resilience. It is a place where the past intertwines with the present.
