Have you ever felt the weight of six centuries? Pollok House whispers tales of the Maxwell family a lineage etched into its very stones. Standing before this grand home you sense its history. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a legacy.

For six hundred years the Maxwells called Pollok House home. Their story is woven into the fabric of this building. This impressive mansion wasn’t the family’s first residence. Three castles once stood here. Their stones were reused to create what you see today. A testament to enduring legacy built with materials from the past.

Completed in 1752 Pollok House stands as a testament to Scottish architecture. Its plain exterior belies the breathtaking interiors. The Clayton family’s artistry shines in the decorative plasterwork. It’s a stunning display of craftsmanship. Equal to that found in Blair Castle.

Within its walls are treasures beyond compare. Sir William Stirling Maxwell a traveler and art enthusiast amassed a remarkable collection. His passion for Spanish art fills the rooms. Portraits of Habsburg rulers and powerful religious scenes adorn the walls. This collection adds to the rich history of Pollok House.

Sir William’s nephew Sir John Stirling Maxwell inherited Pollok House. He expanded the house to accommodate his father’s collection and a magnificent library holding 7000 books. Architect Robert Rowand Anderson masterminded the expansion. A testament to the family’s wealth and love for culture.

Pollok House played a significant role during World War I. It served as a hospital. After the war a pavilion became a sitting room then a dining room. The house is truly a historical place.

In 1931 Sir John hosted a meeting that led to the creation of the National Trust for Scotland. Ten years after his death in 1956 his daughter gifted Pollok House to the City of Glasgow. This act of generosity secured the house’s future. The Maxwell family connection continues. They still use rooms in the house when they are in Glasgow.

Today you can explore the ground floor and parts of the first floor and basement. The house is a beautiful place to visit. You can have tea and scones in the cafe. You can wander the gardens and Pollok Country Park. You can even visit the Burrell Collection. Pollok House is much more than a home it’s a living piece of history.
