On a tragic night in January 1992, Officer Serrano, off duty and with his girlfriend, found himself facing two armed robbers in an elevator. A gunfight erupted. Despite being mortally wounded, Officer Serrano managed to shoot and wound both suspects before they fled. He was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries an hour later. He was only 29 years old. Both suspects were later apprehended. One committed suicide. The other was convicted of murder.
