Opened in 1963, the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant serves over 2.2 million residents. It treats a staggering 175 million gallons of wastewater daily, drawn from a 450-square-mile area. This 40-acre plant, perched on the Point Loma bluffs, boasts a maximum capacity of 240 million gallons per day. The plant utilizes an advanced primary treatment process, permitted under a waiver from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This process, surprisingly effective, consistently removes around 88% of total suspended solids and 65% of biochemical oxygen demand. The Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant doesn’t just clean water. It generates it’s own power. The anaerobic digestion process, heating sludge to 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, produces about 900 million cubic feet of methane daily. This methane fuels the plant entirely, showcasing a remarkable commitment to sustainable energy. Further demonstrating their dedication to minimizing environmental impact, the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant employs a sophisticated odor control system. This system utilizes both wet scrubbing and carbon polishing to neutralize the smell produced by the methane generation process. The treated wastewater is then discharged 4.5 miles offshore through the Point Loma Ocean Outfall, a 12-foot diameter pipe extending 320 feet below the surface. The outfall’s Y-shaped diffuser ensures wide dispersal, minimizing the impact on the ocean ecosystem.
