Did you know Point Loma High School opened in 1925? It’s the third oldest high school in the San Diego Unified School District. Right here stands a testament to history and achievement.

Think of the first graduating class. Just seven students. Three boys and four girls. Their commencement ceremony was held in Balboa Park. How different from today’s large student population.
The original building was impressive a three-story structure. But it was torn down in the 1970s for earthquake safety reasons. Now a whole site modernization project is underway. A new three-story building will house a library classrooms and more.
Point Loma High School boasts an impressive roster of alumni. Don Larsen class of ’47 pitched the only perfect game in World Series history. David Wells another alumnus also threw a perfect game. Both are major league baseball pitchers. Quite a feat. Other notable graduates include Hollywood star Marion Ross and real estate mogul Malin Burnham.
The school’s athletic programs are legendary. The football team won four CIF championships. The women’s basketball team dominated for years winning four straight state championships. Point Loma’s sailing team is also nationally renowned. They’ve won sixteen Baker Trophies and eight Mallory Trophies. A stunning achievement.
The school’s history is interwoven with the Point Loma community. The area’s proximity to the water shaped the school’s identity. The sport fishing industry yacht clubs and military establishments impacted the students’ lives and aspirations.
