A sailboat gliding across the bay. That’s how worshippers often arrived at the Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church’s humble beginnings. Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church wasn’t always the majestic red brick structure it is today. It began as a community Sunday school in 1897. Preachers from distant San Diego braved the journey to share the word.
The Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church’s history is woven into the fabric of Point Loma itself. In 1936 an interdenominational agreement led to the establishment of a Presbyterian Church. The goal was to create a welcoming space for all Christians. Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church was officially incorporated in 1937. Finding a suitable location proved challenging. But a lot near Chatsworth and Voltaire was finally secured.
Construction began on a California mission-style chapel. The first services were held in 1938. This initial phase included the chapel church school rooms a social hall kitchen and offices. The total cost was $30000 including the land. Thomas Franklyn Hudson a young seminary student became the first pastor. The church grew rapidly.
In 1948 an educational unit was added. Before that Sunday school was held in temporary bungalows. The congregation flourished. A second worship service was added to accommodate the growing membership. The 1950s saw further expansion. A groundbreaking ceremony for a new sanctuary took place in 1954. The first services were held in this new sanctuary on the 17th anniversary of the church’s founding. Items like a Bible hymnal newspaper and photos were placed in the cornerstone. The existing buildings were remodeled too.
The 1960s brought new challenges and growth. With over 2000 members a business administrator was hired. After 25 years of service S Dean McBride resigned as pastor. Rev Paul D Clark became the senior pastor in 1968. More building and remodeling projects continued.
The 1970s saw the hiring of the first full-time Minister of Music. A handbell choir and recorder ensemble were formed. The sanctuary’s chancel area was remodeled. The 1980s and 1990s marked a period of significant growth under Arthur F Sueltz. New programs and ministries started including a learning center for toddlers and the Chatsworth Adult Center. The completion of a large Family Life Center in 1990 solidified Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church’s nickname the “Red Brick Church”.
The new millennium brought new leadership and a renewed focus on community. Rev Dr John Powell served as senior pastor from 2005 to 2016. A mission plan centered on the Great Commandment the Great Commission and the Great Ends of the Church was adopted. Extensive renovations took place in 2012 in anticipation of the church’s 75th anniversary. Rev Karla Shaw became senior pastor in 2017 continuing the church’s legacy of service and growth. Today Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community spirit. A beacon on Point Loma its red brick walls whisper stories of generations of worshippers. Their journey started with a simple Sunday school and a sailboat. It continues today a vibrant testament to enduring faith.
