Sculpted in bronze, the Point Depot Bears stand tall. These aren’t just any bears. They’re eight-foot-high emblems of Dublin’s vibrant past. The Point Depot Bears originally resided outside the 3Arena, formerly the Point Depot. They greeted concert-goers with their purposeful stride, a creation of Irish artist Patrick O’Reilly. O’Reilly, known for his monumental bronze works, often uses animals to express his sentiments about life. These bears are no exception. Commissioned by businessman Harry Crosbie, they were meant to brighten a bleak part of the docklands. They stood watch between the arena and the East Link bridge. After Crosbie’s financial troubles, the bears were removed. They were held in a warehouse, their future uncertain. For a time, they were caught in the legal crossfire between Crosbie and NAMA. Then, a new chapter began. Minister Katherine Zappone championed their relocation to Tallaght University Hospital. She envisioned a place where children and families could enjoy them, especially those visiting the Children’s Urgent Care Centre. The hospital foundations, along with support from the community, created a wildflower meadow around the bears. Now, the Point Depot Bears have a new home. They stand in a place of healing, offering a touch of joy and a reminder of Dublin’s artistic spirit. Visible from patient rooms and surrounding buildings, they continue their watchful presence, bringing smiles to faces young and old.
