Lost in contemplation he sits. Before you stands the Poetische Stimmung a poignant sandstone sculpture nestled within Berlin’s Fennpfuhlpark. This artwork isn’t just a statue it’s a window into a specific moment in Berlin’s artistic past.

Created by the Romanian sculptor Anton Ratiu in 1987 the Poetische Stimmung is one of fourteen works from the 2nd International Berlin Sculpture Symposium. The theme was “Poetry of the Metropolis”. Each artist was provided with Reinhardtsdorfer sandstone a material choice that adds to the statue’s unique texture and aged appearance.

The Poetische Stimmung depicts a man seated on a rocky shore his upper body bare a light cloth draped around his waist. Behind him rises a striking Gothic-inspired archway adorned with columns. The stone overhangs creating the illusion of a cavelike alcove. The man’s gaze is directed towards the roof above his right hand bracing himself against the rock his left hand outstretched as if in hopeful expectation. His bare legs hang limply in the water. His posture and facial expression convey profound despair and hopelessness yet the extended left hand hints at a glimmer of hope. A small detail you might miss is the sculptor’s signature A RATIU subtly carved into the back right of the base.

Originally the Poetische Stimmung was placed south of a former department store. It was later moved to its current location probably around 2011 or 2012 during renovations to the area. Interestingly there were initial plans to place the sculpture in the Park am Anton-Saefkow-Platz but this plan was never realized for reasons that remain undocumented. The relocation to its present peaceful spot within the park highlights a fascinating aspect of public art its journey and eventual finding of a suitable home. The Poetische Stimmung’s current location allows for a contemplative viewing experience allowing you to truly connect with the sculpture’s powerful message.

The Poetische Stimmung is more than just a beautiful piece of art. It embodies the spirit of the 1987 sculpture symposium. It also symbolizes the ongoing evolution of Berlin’s urban landscape. As you stand here look closely at the subtle details the textures the way the light plays on the sandstone. Let the Poetische Stimmung’s powerful message of despair and hope resonate within you. It is a poignant reminder of the enduring human spirit the capacity to hope even in the face of profound adversity. Take a moment to reflect on this powerful and moving piece of art. Remember its history and its message of hope. Its enduring presence in the heart of Berlin adds a layer of quiet beauty to this serene park.
