“A bridge named after a philologist?” a curious voice questioned from the tour group. We stand before Podul Hașdeu, and yes, it does bear the name of Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, a remarkable Romanian writer and philologist. Originally, this bridge, gracefully spanning the Dâmbovița River, was named Podul Regina Elisabeta, constructed around the 1880s during the river’s systematization. But, as history often dictates, names change, and with the advent of the communist regime, the bridge was renamed after the adjacent street, honoring Hasdeu. Photos from 1961, 1962, and 1966 showcase Podul Hasdeu in its post-renaming era, a concrete testament to this shift. One particular set of photos from 1975, almost identical yet subtly different, captured the bridge before demolition to make way for the Bucharest Metro’s M1 line. These images not only immortalize the bridge but also provide a glimpse into the lost neighborhood of Izvor, with the Faculty of Chemistry, damaged in 1944 and 1977, looming in the background. Podul Hașdeu is more than just a crossing. It’s a link to Bucharest’s evolving urban landscape, a silent witness to changing times. It’s a reminder of a prominent figure in Romanian literature and a testament to the power of names. Now, let us continue our journey along the Dâmbovița, where more stories await.
