Plommer House carries the name of Dr. Hugh Plommer. He was a founding Fellow of Wolfson College. His legacy continues to shape the college’s identity. He left Plommer House to Wolfson College in his will.
Wolfson College was founded in 1965 as University College. It aimed to accommodate the increasing number of postgraduate researchers after World War II. The college was initially based at Bredon House. It then expanded, acquiring more properties. Wolfson College was renamed in 1973 after the Wolfson Foundation provided crucial funding.
Plommer House stands on the Selwyn Gardens side of Wolfson College. It is one of five former domestic houses adapted for student accommodation. These houses operate under period licenses. This means accommodation is not available on a termly basis.
Let’s take a closer look at Plommer House. The ground floor serves as office and meeting space. The first and second floors offer student accommodation. There are seven rooms in total. The first floor has rooms PH1, PH2, and PH3. The second floor has rooms PH5, PH6, and PH7. Room PH4 is a flat for a couple. It offers more space and privacy.
Each of these rooms features its own washbasin. On the first floor, students share a kitchen and a bathroom with a toilet. A second kitchen and bathroom with a toilet are on the second floor. Room PH4 stands out. It is a self-contained flat ideal for couples. It has a large bed-sitting room, a kitchen, and a bathroom.
Plommer House contributes to Wolfson College’s accommodation options. In 2019 to 2020, prices ranged from £110.39 to £297.15 per week. Price 6 applied to Flat PH4. Rent covered utilities, insurance, cleaning, and computer network access.
Wolfson College provides 409 units of student accommodation. Most are single-occupancy rooms. But some accommodate couples. Five family flats are also available. The college uniquely offers PhD students up to three years of college accommodation. Undergraduates can live on-site for their entire course.
