Isn’t it amazing how a small group can spark a revolution? That’s exactly what happened with Pleasant Zion Baptist Church. This institution began with humble prayer meetings in 1899. Little did those first members know what a legacy they were starting.
Pleasant Zion Baptist Church has a unique history marked by growth and unwavering faith. In the beginning, the small group recognized the need for strong leadership. They elected Reverend Edward Freeman as their pastor. Reverend Freeman and the congregation then sought a place to call home. They found it in Poplar Heights.
Pleasant Zion Baptist Church officially became incorporated in Maryland on May 14, 1900. Five men served as trustees. These men were Reverend Edward Freeman, Brother Silas Nathan, Brother Solomon Little, Brother Henry Jackson and Brother William Venable. They laid the foundation for the church’s future.
Many ministers served Pleasant Zion Baptist Church over the years. These included Reverends William Cave, Arthur Rohne, Holmes, Robinson, Mathews Wilkerson, Joseph Culps and Linwood Perrin. In 1967, under Reverend Perrin’s guidance, the church underwent remodeling. His unexpected death left the congregation in sorrow.
After Reverend Perrin’s passing, the church faced challenges. Membership declined and spiritual fervor waned. In response, the officers elected Reverend James B. Gray, Jr. as pastor on January 9, 1971. He started with only seventeen members.
Reverend Gray revitalized Pleasant Zion Baptist Church. He organized numerous ministries. These included Missionary Ministry, Church School, Shepherd Interest Ministry and Help Hand. Also included were Flowers Ministry, Junior Choir, Young’s People’s Choir and Zion Spiritualizers Choir. He created the Male Chorus, Gray’s Vocal Chorus and Hospitality Ministry. Praise and Worship, New Members Class and Scholarship Ministry became new ministries. He also introduced Youth Ministry and Agape’ Fellowship Ministry.
Recognizing the building’s condition, Pastor Gray initiated improvements. The church was paneled and new pews were installed. In 1976, the Christian Educational Center was added. Church membership grew significantly.
With growing faith, Pastor Gray envisioned a new church building. The congregation began worshipping at the Christian Academy in Edgemere, Maryland. Membership continued to increase. Finally, on October 26, 1986, the new Pleasant Zion Baptist Church building was erected.
In the year 2000, Pastor Gray envisioned a new Christian Education Center. The theme was “It’s Vision Time in 2000”. This vision reflected the church’s ongoing commitment to growth.
Pleasant Zion Baptist Church continues to thrive. It sets an example for future generations. Its legacy empowers them to continue the important work started by their predecessors. Their story is a testament to faith. “We’ve Come This Far By Faith”. This phrase encapsulates the journey of Pleasant Zion Baptist Church. It is a journey of perseverance and divine guidance.
