How resilient would you have to be to rebuild your church twice? That’s exactly what the congregation of Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church faced. This church has a history as mighty as the Mississippi River. Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church was born in 1950. The late Rev. Ruben Watts led the way, gathering his flock at Law Height Hall on Piety Street. Imagine those early days, filled with passionate sermons and the spirit of a new beginning. The congregation quickly outgrew its borrowed space. In 1952, they found a new home on Laussat Place. They transformed a house into a beacon of faith, a testament to their dedication. Then Hurricane Betsy struck in 1965, reducing their beloved church to rubble. But the spirit of Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church couldn’t be broken. They rebuilt, stronger than before, only to face another devastating flood in 1995. Each time, this resilient congregation rose from the ashes, their faith unshaken. Hurricane Katrina dealt a devastating blow in 2005, scattering the congregation and destroying their church once more. Yet, even Katrina couldn’t extinguish their spirit. They purchased this very property on Morrison Road and in 2006, Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church held its first service here. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and the unyielding spirit of the people who call it home.
