“Pleasant Grove Baptist Church” might evoke images of serene countryside. But here on Fulton Street, Brooklyn, stands a testament to faith’s adaptability. This is the story of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church wasn’t always a church. Time jump to 1919. The building was a vibrant theater. It entertained locals as the Normandy Theater. The name changed in 1933. It became the Howard Theater.
For years, the building showcased films and performances. This continued until 1949. The space then transformed again. It briefly became the Carver Theater in 1952.
But a new chapter was on the horizon. Mount Hope United Church of America Inc. purchased the building in 1958. It became a house of worship.
Then in 1970, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church acquired the building. This was under the leadership of Rev. R. Eugene Burley. Pleasant Grove Baptist Church found its permanent home. Today Pleasant Grove Baptist Church is led by Albert L. Jamison Sr.
But the true story of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church began before this building. The late Rev. Jesse A. Bunn had a dream. He wanted to establish a church. He named it after his wife’s childhood church. That church was also named Pleasant Grove. It was in Princeton, Virginia.
Initially, services were held in Rev. Bunn’s home. This continued until April 14, 1952. The church then leased a building on Gates Avenue. But fate intervened. The building collapsed before they could move in.
Kindness emerged from adversity. Rev. Saunders welcomed them. He was the Pastor of New Castle Baptist Church. He allowed Pleasant Grove to hold services there. They met on Sunday afternoons at 3:30 pm.
In March 1953, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church secured its first building. It was located at 134 Sumpter Street. The congregation continued to grow. In 1957, they moved to 629 Herkimer Street. Finally, in 1970, Pleasant Grove found its current location. That location is 1927 Fulton Street.
Members often call Pleasant Grove Baptist Church “The Tabernacle”. Others simply call it “PG.” It is more than just a building. It’s a community. The church aims to nurture relationships. These relationships connect the pastor, officers, and members.
