Can you imagine a bullring so grand it holds over 41,000 people? Here at Plaza México, the world’s largest bullring, that’s exactly what you’ll find. This colossal structure, a Brutalist marvel, opened its doors on February 5, 1946. Plaza México replaced the smaller Toreo de la Condesa, which couldn’t handle Mexico City’s booming population. Every year on February 5th, the Plaza México hosts the Corrida de Aniversario to commemorate its inauguration. Plaza México isn’t just about bullfighting. It has hosted legendary boxing matches. One notable event was Julio César Chávez’s final bout with Frankie Randall in 2004. The Plaza México sits next to the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, formerly Estadio Azul, creating a hub for sports and entertainment. The ring itself is a marvel, measuring 43 meters in diameter and situated 20 meters below street level. Above, the seating capacity is officially 41,262, divided into various sections. These sections include barreras, the first and second tendidos, palcos, balcones, lumbreras, and general seating. However, during completely packed events, the total number of aficionados can reach between 45,000 and 48,000. This is a testament to Plaza México’s enduring appeal. The Plaza México is more than just a bullring. It’s a symbol of Mexican tradition and a monument to the enduring passion for spectacle. It’s part of the larger Ciudad de los Deportes complex, envisioned by Lebanese businessman Neguib Simón. Though Simón only completed Plaza México and the nearby football stadium due to financial constraints, his vision continues to draw crowds. Plaza México is a unique part of Mexico City’s cultural tapestry. The ring is surrounded by sculptures created by Valencian artist Alfredo Just, adding an artistic dimension to the powerful atmosphere. Even its construction is a story in itself. Built by engineer Modesto Rolland, it’s a monolithic structure of reinforced concrete, a feat of engineering for its time. Plaza México continues to thrive as a vibrant venue, hosting not just bullfights but also major concerts and events. From legendary bullfighters to iconic musicians, Plaza México’s stage has seen it all. The legacy of Plaza México extends far beyond the bullring, encompassing history, architecture, and the vibrant spirit of Mexico City.
