Gazing across Plaza Gomensoro, can you envision the gentle waves lapping much closer? Originally, the sea reached the upper level of Plaza Gomensoro. There was even a private beach for the fortunate residents nearby. Today, the plaza sits nestled between the Rambla República del Perú and the streets Federico N. Abadie, Juan Benito Blanco, and Luis C. Bollo, in the charming Pocitos neighborhood. Plaza Gomensoro, established in 1897 by Francisco Piria, the visionary behind the Trouville area, retains its original two-tiered design. This distinct structure, with its upper level offering balconies overlooking the lower plaza, beach, and surrounding area, offers a unique perspective on Montevideo’s coastal beauty. The design reflects a classic European style, with sweeping staircases connecting the two levels. At the heart of the lower plaza lies a circular pergola encasing a classically designed gazebo. Lush vegetation, carefully delineated by brick pathways, surrounds the pergola. Benches scattered throughout the area offer quiet spots for contemplation. Plaza Gomensoro isn’t just a visual feast. It’s a tribute to Tomás Gomensoro, a significant figure in Uruguayan history who served as president from 1872 to 1873. His legacy is etched into the very fabric of this space. Over the years, Plaza Gomensoro has seen its share of transformations. In 1910, the paving of the Pocitos rambla led to adjustments in the plaza’s dimensions, extending it eastward towards the coast. It was officially named “Tomás Gomensoro” in 1919. The 1920s brought a redesign to accommodate its new, landscaped proportions. More recently, in 1986, a meticulous reconstruction preserved the plaza’s original character and materials. The staircases, brick paving, and central pergola, crafted from small pieces of marble and granite, were all carefully restored. This dedication to preserving the past has earned Plaza Gomensoro the distinction of being recognized as a Municipal Site of Interest since 1993. Even today, the plaza continues to evolve. Renovations in 2018 and 2019 further enhanced its accessibility and beauty. These improvements included root pruning, pavement repairs, and the addition of ramps, all while respecting the plaza’s historical essence. So, as you stroll through Plaza Gomensoro, remember, you’re not just walking through a park. You’re walking through time, experiencing a blend of history, nature, and human ingenuity. This plaza stands as a testament to Uruguay’s rich past and a vibrant hub for its present.
