Have you ever imagined a plaza so grand, it held pieces of the Eiffel Tower’s twin? Welcome to Plaza Colón in Córdoba, a place where history whispers from ornate fountains and statues. This plaza wasn’t always called Colón. It was born in 1888 as Plaza Juárez Celman, a tribute to the then-president Miguel Juárez Celman, a Córdoba native. He gifted the city magnificent remnants of Argentina’s pavilion from the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition, the same year the Eiffel Tower debuted. Imagine, the statues of Neptune and Amphitrite, the very same ones that graced Paris, now reside here. Plaza Colón’s centerpiece, a six-meter-tall fountain, tells a tale of gods and mortals. Neptune, god of the sea, and his wife Amphitrite, alongside the mortal Acis and the nereid Galatea, adorn the lower basin. Above, children clasp hands, symbolizing unity and innocence. This fountain murmurs secrets of the sea, its water cascading through small channels into a Venetian mosaic-tiled pool, a touch added by architect Carlos David in the 1950s. The plaza’s heart beats with more than just water. Seven statues stand sentinel, embodying art, science, agriculture, commerce, navigation, and feminine industry. These figures, crafted by renowned sculptors like Mathurin Moreau and Augustin Pajou, once watched over the Argentine pavilion in Paris. A missing eighth statue, a victim of vandalism, serves as a reminder of time’s passage and the fragility of art. Four flagpoles, two “sovereign” for the national flag and two “festive” for celebratory banners, mark the plaza’s corners. Eight ornate columns, like grand candelabras, line the edge along Santa Rosa street. Plaza Colón isn’t just a historical relic; it’s a living space. After years of neglect, it underwent a revitalization, regaining lost pieces and vibrant colors. Today, new trees offer shade, and a modern irrigation system keeps the gardens lush. A children’s playground, a fitness area, and a dog park cater to modern needs, while accessible ramps and tactile paving ensure inclusivity. As you stand here, surrounded by whispers of the past and the vibrancy of the present, you understand Plaza Colón is more than just a plaza. It’s a testament to Córdoba’s rich history, a vibrant hub of community life, and a beautiful fusion of art, nature, and heritage.
