Is it a trick of the light? Or are those angel wings we see? Here along Kelly Drive, amidst the bustling cityscape, stand the Playing Angels. Three bronze figures, forever frozen in a moment of musical joy. The Playing Angels statue has graced this spot since 1972. However, their journey to Philadelphia was anything but straightforward. These angels were cast from originals sculpted by the renowned Swedish artist Carl Milles. He initially crafted five angel statues for a private project in Philadelphia. But fate, it seems, had other plans. When that project fell through, one angel found a new home in Kansas City, another in Virginia. The remaining three? They became part of Millesgården, the artist’s beautiful estate in Stockholm. Thankfully, Philadelphia didn’t miss out entirely. Casts were made of the three angels residing in Sweden, finding their way to our fair city thanks to the Fairmount Park Art Association. Today, they stand as a testament to the enduring power of art and a reminder that even angels can take a detour on their journey.
