Isn’t it interesting how a place can transform? Today we are standing in Playa Vista. It is a neighborhood in the Westside area of Los Angeles. It is a place with a unique story.
Playa Vista once was the headquarters of Hughes Aircraft Company. From 1941 to 1985, this was a hub of aviation innovation. The famous Spruce Goose was constructed here. This massive aircraft was a symbol of Howard Hughes’ ambition.
Now, Playa Vista is a planned community. Development began in 2002. It is a mix of homes, offices, and shops. Playa Vista has become part of Silicon Beach. It attracts businesses in technology, media, and entertainment.
But there is more to the story. The Tongva Native Americans once lived here. Their village was called Guashna. A sacred burial site is located in Playa Vista. During construction, remains were discovered. These remains were reburied in a ceremony. Playa Vista even planned a museum. This was to educate people about the Tongva tribe and the Ballona Wetlands.
In 1839, this land was part of Rancho La Ballona. Later, in 1887, it became part of Port Ballona. Before development, much of Playa Vista was wetlands. It was connected to a large salt-marsh. This was part of the Ballona Creek watershed.
Howard Hughes bought the site in the 1940s. He built an airfield and aircraft factory. The Spruce Goose was transported to Long Beach for its only flight in 1947.
DreamWorks once planned to build a studio here. But the project failed. In 2001, Phase One of Playa Vista began. It was designed as a technologically advanced community. It even gained recognition from President Bill Clinton in 1998.
Playa Vista was built with green development in mind. It uses energy-saving systems. It also uses recycled materials. However, some people opposed the development. They were concerned about traffic and the environment.
A methane controversy arose around 2000. Studies were conducted. The city required gas mitigation systems. These included a membrane shield, vents, and alarms. Officials stated that Playa Vista has the strictest safety standards in the country.
Playa Vista’s parks are serviced with recycled water. This shows a commitment to conservation. Playa Vista is bordered by several communities. These include Del Rey, Culver City, and Playa del Rey.
Bluff Creek runs through Playa Vista. The Playa Vista Riparian Corridor surrounds this creek. It is a popular spot for birdwatching. The area has walking paths and recreational areas. Ballona Discovery Park features exhibits about the area’s history.
The population in 2000 was 2,416. By 2008, it had increased to 6,010. The neighborhood is ethnically diverse.
Several companies have offices in Playa Vista. These include Electronic Arts and Belkin.
The Los Angeles Police Department operates a station here. The Los Angeles Public Library also has a branch. There are parks and sports fields. The Los Angeles Clippers have a training facility here.
