In 1502, a violent storm sunk a large Spanish fleet near Cabo Engaño. The fleet contained treasures colonists and other men bound for Spain. Nicolas Ovando sent 30 to 32 ships. Only a few damaged ships returned. One ship the Aguja made it safely to Spain.
