PlatteForum’s Artist Residency is highly competitive. It’s an international program. Artists receive studio space support and time to create. They explore social justice issues. Resident artists lead workshops. High school ArtLab interns participate. Their collaborations culminate in exhibitions and performances. PlatteForum actively supports artists. It encourages BIPOC LGBTQIA+ and artists with disabilities to apply.
PlatteForum’s commitment extends beyond the studio. They offer support. This includes stipends for materials teaching and opportunities like podcasts or artist talks. Even mental health support is provided through partnerships. Resident artists receive mentorship and guidance from staff. They get exhibition promotion and media support. The program is highly competitive. Only four to five artists are selected annually from over 100 applicants. Each residency lasts 6-8 weeks.
One recent resident artist Lucy Holtsnider focused on Suncor. This is a massive oil refinery in Commerce City. It’s notorious for pollution. Lucy and the interns explored alternative uses for the refinery site. They imagined a future without fossil fuels. Affordable housing open space and bikeable roads were some ideas. The interns visited Suncor. They also visited the Rocky Mountain Arsenal prairie. This provided a stark contrast. Lucy brought an etching press. Interns learned various printmaking techniques.
