Jean Lippmann was born in Paris in 1890. He was executed in 1944 in Prads. Lippmann was an officer in the Organisation de résistance de l’Armée ORA. He used the pseudonyms Chrono II and Lorrain.

Lippmann’s parents were bourgeois cultured and progressive. His father became a mathematics professor. His mother was a musician. She even camped alone in Yugoslavia.

Jean acquired a solid education. He studied science and art. He spoke German and Italian. He enjoyed mountain sports with his brother Paul. After studying law, he became a lawyer in Nice. He married Renée Abraham in Lyon in 1914.

During World War I Jean Lippmann served with distinction. He was repeatedly cited for bravery. He rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant. In 1920 he was proposed for the Legion of Honour.

After the war Jean Lippmann settled in Lyon. Later he returned to Nice. He bought a position as a bailiff. He lived well in Nice. Lippmann enjoyed sports especially horseback riding. He was a member of the French Alpine Club. He travelled extensively in Europe.

Lippmann was disgusted by war profiteers. He admired the Russian Revolution. As an army lawyer he defended deserters. He supported leftist causes. Though a patriot he was horrified by the rise of Nazism.

In 1939 Lippmann volunteered for service. He was assigned to the 94th Mountain Artillery Regiment. His son Pierre also volunteered. Another son Jacques was a lieutenant. Lippmann’s wife died of cancer in 1940. Jean Lippmann was captured in 1940.

After repatriation due to illness Lippmann joined the Resistance. He led the Nice-Menton sector of the Tartane network. He went into hiding with his children in 1943.

The family settled in the Laverq valley. They formed a maquis. Jean Lippmann became its leader. He was assisted by his sons Jacques and Claude. The maquis grew to about thirty members.

Jean Lippmann became part of the ORA regional staff in 1944. He participated in negotiations with the Italian Resistance. These negotiations led to agreements. They aimed to supply arms. They promoted Franco-Italian fraternity.

When the insurrection was ordered the Ubaye became a center of mobilization. Lippmann led resistance fighters. They briefly took control of Barcelonnette. He was captured and executed by the Nazis.

After the war Jean Lippmann’s body was moved to Nice. He was buried in the city’s Jewish cemetery. He posthumously received the Medal of the Resistance.
