The Plaque commémorative Georges MAKOVSKI marks the spot where a French hero made his last stand. Makowski was born in Riga Latvia in 1907. He later became a French citizen. Makowski wasn’t just any citizen. He was a key figure in the Franco-Polish F2 resistance network.

Imagine Nice during the Second World War. The city was under Italian occupation. Makowski worked in an apartment on Rue Verdi. He facilitated contacts for the resistance. His family lived in La Roquette-sur-Siagne.

The network collected vital intelligence. Makowski’s property enabled secret meetings and radio transmissions. He became second in command of the Anne sub-network. It specialized in gathering information.

In July 1943 the Gestapo raided his Nice apartment. Makowski knew he was compromised. He burned crucial documents protecting his comrades. Facing capture Makowski made a fateful decision.

Rather than risk torture and reveal secrets he chose to die. He jumped from his fifth-floor apartment window. The Plaque commémorative Georges MAKOVSKI stands at 16 Rue Verdi.
