Francis Gallo. A name etched not just onto a plaque here in Vieux Nice, but onto the very heart of this city’s resistance. This plaque commémorative Francis GALLO, a mémorial de guerre, tells a story of defiance and youthful courage amidst the Nazi occupation during World War II. Francis, a mere 17-and-a-half years old, was a lycéen, a high school student, caught in the grip of war. He didn’t stand idly by. He joined the Corps francs de la Libération, the CFL, a beacon of hope against the oppressive darkness. Along with other young patriots, Francis became part of the Groupe Albatros, risking everything for freedom. Their bravery, however, met a tragic end. Captured by the Nazis, Francis and 10 others were taken to Saint-Julien-du-Verdon and summarily executed on June 11, 1944. The inscription on the plaque commémorative Francis GALLO reads “C.F.L. Groupe Albatros – A la mémoire du patriote Francis GALLO exécuté par les nazis à St Julien du Verdon le 11 juin 1944 à l’âge de 17ans 1/2 F.F.I. – Souvenez-vous.” Remember. A powerful word. It serves as both a command and a plea. A street in Vieux Nice now bears his name, a permanent reminder of his sacrifice. The plaque commémorative Francis GALLO, this simple guard stone, isn’t just a piece of metal. It’s a testament to the spirit of resistance. It’s a poignant echo of a young life cut short, a life given for the ideals of liberty. As you stand here, before this memorial de guerre, remember Francis Gallo. Remember his courage, his sacrifice, and the fight for freedom that continues to inspire generations.
