France remembers its fallen. But how does it do it? The Plaque commémorative du col de Villefranche stands as a solemn reminder. It honors those from Villefranche-sur-Mer who sacrificed everything. They gave their lives in World War I. They fought again in World War II. The memorial also remembers those who served in Indochina from 1946 to 1954. Algeria from 1954 to 1962 is also remembered here.

This Plaque commémorative du col de Villefranche is not alone. You can find war memorials everywhere in France. After World War I, nearly every city and village constructed one. Young people from all over France died in that terrible war. Over 1.5 million French victims. Over 9 million victims in all.

In the 1920s, the Third French Republic mandated a monument in every municipality. These memorials vary in style. A very few are explicitly pacifist.

Nice’s war memorial offers a grand example. Built from 1924 to 1928, it occupies a prominent location. The memorial was deliberately placed where nobody could miss it. It rises from the rock of the Old City hill. It faces the sea and the port. A massive construction, it stands 32 meters high. Columns and a temple style evoke remembrance. The names of 4,000 Nice residents who died during the war are engraved here.

Later, names of Nice residents who died in other conflicts were added. These included World War II. Also, the decolonization wars in Indochina and Algeria.

Today, ceremonies take place every November 11 and May 8. Like everywhere else in France, the ceremonies honor the fallen. Finding the monument is easy. Simply go to the port. Follow the Promenade des Anglais until Rauba Capeu. You cannot miss it.

The memorial in Nice shares similarities with the Plaque commémorative du col de Villefranche. Both commemorate lives lost in war. Both serve as focal points for remembrance ceremonies. They stand as lasting tributes to sacrifice and loss.
