Have you ever wondered how a planetarium can be both a temple of science and a canvas for art? The Montréal Planetarium, right here before us, masterfully blends these two seemingly disparate worlds. Opened in April 2013, this isn’t the city’s first foray into the cosmos. It succeeded the Dow Planetarium, which captivated audiences for decades before closing its doors in 2011. This newer Montréal Planetarium, part of the Space for Life museum complex, takes its commitment to the universe to a whole new level. The building itself is a marvel of sustainable design, earning LEED Platinum certification. Its aluminum and concrete form houses two distinct theatre domes: “Chaos” and “Milky Way.” Imagine stepping into “Chaos” and being swept away by the science of astronomy. Then, transition to the “Milky Way” for an artistic interpretation of the cosmos. The experience is curated by Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon, blending scientific accuracy with artistic expression. The Montréal Planetarium offers more than just dazzling shows. It boasts an exhibit area where you can get up close and personal with meteorites. In the interactive “Exo” zone, touchscreens explore exobiology, pondering the origins of life and the possibility of life beyond Earth. One of the planetarium’s most captivating shows, “Auralae,” takes you on a 40-minute journey to witness the breathtaking aurora borealis. The show combines stunning images of the Northern Lights captured in Yellowknife with evocative music and live commentary by the planetarium’s knowledgeable science interpreters. They even explain the scientific origins of this celestial phenomenon. In March 2015, a dedicated team from the Montréal Planetarium embarked on an expedition to Yellowknife, capturing an astounding 179,000 images of the aurora. Yellowknife is ideal for this because of its minimal light pollution, allowing the aurora to be visible an average of 240 nights a year. The Montréal Planetarium also showcases films like the American Museum of Natural History’s “Dark Universe” and National Geographic’s “Asteroid: Extreme Mission,” some accompanied by insightful live commentary. So, as you explore the Montréal Planetarium, remember you’re not just visiting a museum, but experiencing a cosmic dance between science and art, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the universe.
