Was there ever a time when the sandy shores of Plage de Longueuil hosted more than just sunbathers? Plage de Longueuil, a ribbon of golden sand stretching 125 meters, now offers a tranquil escape with sparkling views of the St. Lawrence River and Montreal. But its history whispers of a different era. Imagine the year is 1920. Long before Plage de Longueuil existed, locals flocked to a different spot. They gathered on the riverbank, near Parc LeMoyne and the old convent, for a refreshing dip. Fast forward to the 1940s and 50s. Quinn Wharf, near the Longueuil Boating Club and Club Excel, became the favored swimming spot. Children splashed in a floating wooden pool affectionately nicknamed “the crib.” It wasn’t until June 2016 that Plage de Longueuil, as we know it, officially opened. This new beach on Île Charron, with its soft sand, designated swimming area, and stunning vistas, quickly became a popular destination. Volleyball courts, picnic tables, play areas, and restrooms complete the modern amenities. But the spirit of those earlier swimming holes, with their simple pleasures and community gatherings, still lingers in the air at Plage de Longueuil. In 2014, this beach even served as a competition venue for the Quebec Games finals. As you bask in the sun or take a refreshing swim, remember those who came before. They sought the same simple joy of a cool dip on a hot day, forging a connection to this place that continues to this day at Plage de Longueuil.
