Is it true that this square was once an execution ground? Indeed, we are standing at Place Djemaa el-Fna. This square is more than just a meeting point. It is a stage where history and culture collide.

Place Djemaa el-Fna is Marrakesh’s main square. It is the heart of the old city. Locals and tourists gather here day and night. They come to eat, shop, and witness the vibrant shows.

The name Djemaa el-Fna has a dark origin. Jamaa means “congregation” or “mosque”. Fna can mean “death” or “ruin”. One theory suggests the name refers to a ruined mosque. Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur started building a grand mosque here in the 16th century. But the project was abandoned. The unfinished mosque fell into ruin. People then called the square “Mosque of Ruins”.

In the past, Place Djemaa el-Fna served many purposes. It was a battlefield where troops gathered. Sultans showed off their military strength. It was a place for celebrations. Ceremonies and religious holidays took place here. It was also a site for law enforcement. Criminals and rebels faced public executions.

Imagine this square in the 19th century. Historians say that authorities ordered butchers to behead convicted people. A Jewish man collected the heads. He salted them and displayed them on fences. Both the butcher and the Jewish man were paid for this gruesome task. In 1867, one British historian reported 45 people beheaded in a single day.

Next to Place Djemaa el-Fna was a slave market. It disappeared in the 19th century. Traders sold second-class slaves here. First-class slaves were sold privately in homes.

Place Djemaa el-Fna also hosted a merchandise market every Thursday. Farmers brought agricultural products and animals. Another market took place outside Bab Doukkala Gate every Tuesday. People from the countryside sold wheat, butter, oil, and dates.

In 1864, disaster struck. A massive explosion shook Place Djemaa el-Fna. A hotel stored 400 quintals of gunpowder. A fire ignited the explosives. The square was crowded at sunset. The explosion killed 300 people. Houses around the square turned to rubble. Some say government officials caused the explosion to hide misuse of public funds.

Since the 17th century, Place Djemaa el-Fna has been a stage for entertainment. Storytellers shared tales in the morning. Musicians and singers filled the square with sound. Acrobats, fortune tellers, and snake charmers performed. Place Djemaa el-Fna became an open-air theater.

Today, Place Djemaa el-Fna still teems with life. During the day, you find orange juice stalls and water sellers. You see youths with chained monkeys and snake charmers. As the day ends, storytellers appear. Magicians and dancing boys entertain the crowds. At night, food stalls fill the square.

In 2001, UNESCO recognized Place Djemaa el-Fna as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage. This protects its cultural space and traditions. The square embodies a rich oral and intangible heritage.

In 2011, a bombing at a cafe killed 17 people. In 2023, an earthquake damaged the Kharbouch Mosque overlooking the square. Despite these events, Place Djemaa el-Fna remains resilient.

Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere. The spectacle of Place Djemaa el-Fna repeats daily. Each day is different. Voices, sounds, and gestures change. People see, listen, smell, taste, and touch. The square shelters a rich oral and intangible tradition.
