“Ever wondered where Lille’s pulse truly quickens?” That’s here at Place de la Gare. This urban space is more than just a spot to catch a train. It’s a place with stories etched into every stone.

Originally, this area was densely built. It was part of the Saint-Maurice parish. But in the mid-19th century, Lille needed to breathe. The first train station was built in 1846. It quickly became too small for the growing city. It was hemmed by buildings. Access was difficult.

The decision was made to create a grand new square. It was linked directly to the city center. Demolitions began from 1867 to 1869 to make Place de la Gare. The new Rue Faidherbe was built. It connected the square to Place du Théâtre.

The old Franciscan convent was torn down. It had been repurposed as a Protestant church and asylum. New buildings arose in the Haussmann style. The Place de la Gare officially received its name in 1872.

Tragedy struck during the siege of 1914. Part of the square was destroyed by bombing. After World War I, the destroyed sections were rebuilt. Rue du Molinel replaced the old Rue du Vieux-Marché-aux-Moutons. The Haussmann buildings survived. They stand as a testament to an earlier time.

The Place de la Gare became the heart of Lille’s tram system. Horse-drawn trams gave way to electric ones. The tram network was created in 1874. In the early 1960s, buses replaced trams.

Today, Place de la Gare is a bustling hub. Around 110000 people pass through it every day. Hotels cafes and shops line the square. A pharmacy and a bank also call it home.

Until recently, fountains graced the square. They were removed in 2019 to improve traffic flow. Now, the Place de la Gare is a pedestrian-friendly space. It’s a place where history meets modern life. It is a place where past echoes merge with the rhythm of Lille today. This square embodies Lille’s constant evolution.
