“Reflections,” someone mutters nearby. The Pixel Wall stands before you. It is more than just a mirrored surface. This artwork creates a distorted reflection. It invites us to see Eddington differently. The Pixel Wall works alongside the Fata Morgana Teahouse. Both were inspired by the idea of a wanderer.
The underpinning narrative speaks of someone who journeys without destination. This person focuses on their perception and experience of their surroundings. Think of the views, sounds, and scents. You are invited to be the wanderer here at the Pixel Wall.
The Pixel Wall is a large mirrored surface. It is designed to create a distorted reflection of its surroundings. The Pixel Wall is a fifteen-metre curved screen. It features polished steel squares.
The parkland in front of you is reflected in the wall. It responds playfully to the light. The Pixel Wall glistens in the sun. It almost shimmers on the lakeside.
The Fata Morgana Teahouse is nearby. Some students nicknamed it “The Rage Cage”. This was because people partied in it when clubs were closed during the pandemic.
Eddington is home to several pieces of public art. Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain is another. It consists of seven giant discs. These discs light up with LEDs at dusk. They light up the evening sky. The lights even act as a rudimentary clock. A disc will show a single color. Over an hour, it moves through the spectrum. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Then, it returns to its starting color on the hour.
Another artwork is Ripple-Marked Radiance. This tapestry celebrates human invention. It exemplifies the work of scientist Hertha Ayrton. The energy of ripples and lightwaves form a metaphor. It represents the energy of the new community at Eddington.
We Are All Under The Same Sky is at the University of Cambridge Primary School. Each glass panel is imprinted with an image of the sky. The images are from locations around the globe.
The Public Art enhances the sense of place in the neighbourhood. It sparks interest and intrigue amongst all. So, take a moment. Look at the Pixel Wall. What do you see reflected? What do you feel as you wander?
